        Celebrate Mexican Independence Day

Have you ever noticed that almost all mariachi songs end the same way? "Tan-tan!" That doesn't keep me from tearing up every time I hear "Que Bonita Es Mi Tierra," my grandmother's favorite that reminds me of Sunday dinners and carne asadas with the whole family.

Whether mariachi, tríos, ranchera or norteña is your thing, it's time to break out the "¡Viva México!" That's right, it's almost Independence Day for Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos (the country's official name).

Come late night on September 15th, Mexicans the world over will be in full party mode. In Mexico City, the Zócalo, opens a new window will be packed with people, spotlights will be lighting up the National Palace, and the Mexican president will be waving that tri-color flag and ringing the ceremonial bell for all he's worth.

Here's what it looked like during the Bicentenario--the 200 year anniversary of Mexican Independence from Spanish rule.

But wait! It's not a party without fireworks:

While the 'grito', or shout for independence, has its roots in armed battle, now we celebrate our history and our heritage with pride and a seriously great party. That's what "Las Fiestas Patrias" are all about. Maybe there's one in your neighborhood? Let us know in the comments. If not, maybe try one of these...
