Looking for some engaging, enlightening and, most importantly, fun summer activities? As you browse our event listings to plan your summer schedule, you’ll find some titled “Middle Scholars.”
We are thrilled to have been selected by the Urban Libraries Council, opens a new window to participate in their Building Equity: Amplify Summer Learning, opens a new window initiative. As part of a cohort of more than 20 libraries in the United States and Canada, we are committed to providing STEAM learning opportunities to middle school youth this summer, especially to those who haven’t had access to them for a variety of reasons.
We are partnering with three County of San Mateo agencies to highlight the diversity of STEAM experiences available, with the hopes of sparking a lifelong curiosity and interest in STEAM. Many of our locations will host a program from our partners this summer:
- Middle Scholars will learn about resource conservation and sustainability with projects designed by the County’s Office of Sustainability, opens a new window and their team of experts.
- An educator from the San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District, opens a new window will help Scholars understand the fascinating world of insects, science, and observation through hands-on learning with insects and mosquitos.
- Our Middle Scholars will learn about biomimicry and engineering from the San Mateo County Parks Department, opens a new window.
Many thanks to the staff in these departments, who have worked extensively with us to provide interesting and age-appropriate programming!
In addition to these partner programs, every library location will host at least one STEAM-themed escape room-style challenge for middle schoolers! Check our event listings for more fun programs near you.
