Join us on Sunday, April 28, at 2 PM at Portola Valley Library for a special reading with local legend, and former Portola Valley Mayor, Sue Crane, along with her co-author Helen Park Bigelow. Their book, Behind the Barrels: The Women of Ridge chronicles the story of three families who started a vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The memoir combines local history with tender relationships and feminism.
Event Details
All ages are welcome at this event as we honor the legacy Sue Crane built along with her friends and family. Copies of Behind the Barrel: The Women of Ridge will be available for sale after the event. Proceeds will go towards a scholarship fund for the children of employees of the Sequoias. Light refreshments will be shared in the back patio after the reading. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Portola Valley Library, opens a new window.
About Sue Crane
Sue Crane and her husband moved to Portola Valley in 1964 to raise their children. Sue served on the Town Council for twelve years, including two terms as Mayor. Sue also served as the President of the Friends of the Portola Valley Library board. She currently lives in the Sequoias along with friend and co-author Helen Bigelow.
About Helen Park Bigelow
Helen Park Bigelow is a professional potter and writer. Her previous works are available on Link+ and include David Park, painter, opens a new window and Given Time, opens a new window. Helen’s most recent work is Sue Crane’s memoir, Behind the Barrel: The Women of Ridge published in 2023. The memoir came together from Sue’s memories and recollections of the early years of Ridge.
