At the Library, Every Day Is Earth Day

Looking for ways to celebrate Earth Day this April? San Mateo County Libraries is here to help you live a more sustainable lifestyle every day of the year. Whether conserving electricity and water with our energy and water saving toolkits, or growing a garden with seeds from our seed libraries, it is easy to become a steward of our beautiful and precious planet with resources from our libraries.

Attend a Sustainability Event

We are excited to offer a variety of sustainability programming throughout the month of April.

  • Join us for Love Food Hate Waste, a virtual workshop on how to use food preservation to maximize the food you enjoy and minimize the food you waste. Be sure to reserve your spot.
  • Discover the power of plantable paper and explore your artistic side by making paper seed balls to easily start your own garden.
  • Calling all eco-conscious students! Transform leftover fabric scraps into cool, personalized keychains in this month’s Upcycling Power Up Afternoon program. All skill levels welcome!
  • Break out of an Earth Day escape room by solving puzzles to unlock the door before the electricity shuts off. Space is limited, so please register for one of the three available slots.

Check out an Energy and Water Saving Toolkit

Do you want to save electricity, water and money? Check out an energy and water savings toolkit available at all our locations thanks to the San Mateo County Office of Sustainability, opens a new window! The kits contain tools to measure and correct water leaks, heat loss and electricity overuse, as well as many supplies that are yours to keep, including an LED lightbulb, low-flow faucet aerators and a low-flow showerhead. Learn more about our energy and water saving toolkits.

Grow a Garden With Our Seed Libraries

We are proud to offer seed libraries at many of our locations. While specific usage guidelines may vary by location, all of our seed libraries are free for community members to browse, take seeds from and donate seeds to. Seed selection varies, but you may get lucky and find seeds for your favorite flower, native plant, herb or garden vegetable.

Growing a garden and donating your extra saved seeds to a seed library is one of the most impactful ways to promote sustainability not only in your own life, but within our community as a whole! Learn more about how our seed libraries work.
