A Night to Remember: Library Night With the San Francisco Giants

Written By: Ella D. with Library Communications

San Mateo County Libraries kicked off National Library Week with a splash.

On Monday, April 7, we joined the San Francisco Giants and libraries all across the San Francisco Bay Area to host our first-ever Library Night at Oracle Park. We're so glad we can engage with our community through events like these — more are on the way!

Books at the Ballpark

This grand-slam partnership was created to bring awareness to library services and offerings in a new setting: the ballpark! Libraries near and far gathered in the scenic China Basin Park to give out library cards, share valuable resources and enjoy festivities before the Giants game. With a stunning view of the San Francisco Bay and Oracle Park, this special outreach event is unlike anything San Mateo County Libraries has ever done before.

Our outreach tables were bustling with new and current patrons, all lining up to sign up for our new, limited edition Giants library cards. Hardworking staff members signed up hundreds of people for new library cards and gave out 300 free baseball books to Giants fans of all ages. We brought our Makermobile to engage our community in STEM activities, and set up a comfy reading garden for visitors to unwind and read before the game.

Together, Our Libraries Build Community

It was so rewarding to see different library communities join forces to make this event a success. Just like San Mateo County Libraries, our library neighbors throughout the Bay Area offer more than just books. We loved seeing the fun activities and offerings from each library, like button-making and face painting!

Throughout the event, you could feel our community growing closer and memories being made. Together, our libraries brought smiling faces, laughter and new connections to China Basin Park. Scroll through below to see photos from the event.

We're looking forward to connecting with our community again soon — exciting plans are underway to join the San Mateo County Fair later this year. We'll be bringing our reading garden, maker activities, free books, Giants library cards and more. Stay tuned for details!

A Night to Remember

Thank you to the San Francisco Giants, our library neighbors and our supportive community who made this a night to remember. If you weren't able to attend the event but are still interested in supporting San Mateo County Libraries, please visit our Friends of the Library and Foundation for San Mateo County Libraries.

San Mateo County Libraries locations will have limited edition Giants library cards available for eligible residents on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last. To learn more about the San Francisco Giants baseball team and their impact on the Bay Area, check out this book list.
