250 Years of American History


This year, the United States is commemorating 250 years since its founding. Known as the Semiquincentennial, or the Quarter Millennium, July 4, 2026 marks the 250
th Independence Day and signing of the Declaration of Independence.  

In celebration of the United States' Semiquincentennial, San Mateo County Libraries is excited to offer a collection of stories that focus on individuals and events in American history. These titles, provided in partnership with the California State Library and the California Library Association, shed light on the American experience through diverse perspectives. 

The collection consists of a wide array of topics including women’s right to vote in Finish the Fight!, American history and culture through the lens of food in Bite by Bite and the civil rights movement in March. Learn about the history of the Statue of Liberty in Her Right Foot by local author Dave Eggers and the making of the American flag in Our Flag Was Still There.

Explore these titles and more to learn about American history and events that have shaped the country over the past two and half centuries.
