Step Into the Community with Wellness
It was a gloomy and cloudy morning; the kind of day that makes you want to stay inside with a warm cup of tea. But for the Atherton Library Walking Club, it was the day of our inaugural special walk, and we were determined to set out on our adventure at the Ravenswood Preserve in East Palo Alto. With the wind howling and a drizzle beginning to fall, I worried that no one would show up, but as I approached our meeting point, my concerns melted away when I saw three of our regular walkers and two new faces ready to brave the weather together.
Bundled up against the cold, we began our two-mile loop. Finding warmth in conversation and shared company. To commemorate this special first outing, we paused for a group photo, capturing the joy and resilience of our little walking community.
Building Community, One Step at a Time
The Walking Club at Atherton Library started in January with a simple yet meaningful goal: to create a welcoming space where people could connect, socialize and stay active. Every Friday from 9:45–10:30 AM, we gather at Holbrook Palmer Park in Atherton for a walk. On the third Friday of each month, we venture beyond our usual path to explore scenic locations within a short drive of the Atherton Library.
Walking offers so many benefits: it boosts cardiovascular health, strengthens bones, improves balance, enhances mood and increases energy levels. But beyond physical perks, our club has become a place for friendship and community. As Kathy, one of our participants, shared, "I love to walk and do so frequently. I particularly like walking with neighbors. I'm in a good mood after having a nice chat with pleasant people."
Laura and Patrick echoed this sentiment, highlighting that "the walking club is an easy way to stay active" and "a wonderful opportunity to connect with others in the community." And with our friendly and enthusiastic leaders guiding each walk, Kathy adds, "The leaders are great!"
Join Us On Our Next Walk
The Atherton Library Walking Club offers a fun and welcoming way to enjoy the outdoors, meet new people and boost well-being. With routes for all fitness levels, everyone can participate comfortably while enjoying the benefits of movement and connection. As one participant put it, "I would encourage others to join to see the benefits of a brisk walk and communicating with friendly people."
Neighbors from all around our community are welcome to join our walks—you don't have to be an Atherton resident to participate. If you're looking for similar opportunities closer to home, San Mateo County Libraries offers health and wellness classes like tai chi, yoga, zumba and more. Explore our Events Calendar to see all our wellness events happening soon. We can’t wait to see you on the trail!
