Inspiring a Lifelong Love of Reading

The Imagination Library of San Mateo County, opens a new window invites families to sign up for free, monthly books in the mail for children ages 0-5. Founded by Dolly Parton, the book gifting program is offered around the world, in partnership with local organizations.

In less than a year, our Foundation and Friends groups have funded more than 7,000 children to receive 47,731 free books—making a tangible impact on early childhood literacy. Every individual donor plays a key role in this success. In California, contributions go twice as far, because every local dollar is matched and funded by the State of California. A Magical Delivery—Every Single Month

For kids enrolled in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the mailbox becomes a place of magic. Every month, enrolled children in San Mateo County from birth to age five receive a brand-new, high-quality book delivered right to their home—to keep. Mailing books directly to children’s homes expands access to reading for families who face barriers to visiting libraries regularly.

Why Reading Matters (Even for Babies)

Reading aloud to children from the very beginning, even when they’re babies who can’t yet sit up, let alone read, has lifelong benefits. Books foster meaningful one-on-one time between parents or guardians and children, creating valuable bonding routines. Early exposure to language builds brain connections, supports socio-emotional development and lays the foundation for future learning. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library shows a powerful 29% increase in kindergarten readiness of those who participate in the program compared to those who don't.

Two Languages, Twice the Power

Raising your child in more than one language? Stories told in two languages help build vocabulary, deepen comprehension and connect children to their culture and community. The Imagination Library offers fully bilingual Spanish and English books to support your family’s language journey.

Signing Up is Easy

You can sign up for the Imagination Library online or in person at any San Mateo County Libraries location. It’s one of the easiest and most rewarding things you can do to support your child’s early development.
