Library of Things: For the Tech Lovers

Written By: Daniela C. at North Fair Oaks Library

Libraries have evolved over the years, and San Mateo County Libraries is no different. We've expanded beyond books and now include many new technology resources. We're always striving to make our collection more equitable and close the technology gap in our county. As part of the larger Library of Things, we have made access to tools and technology easier than ever before!

Laptops and Hotspots

The world is now online and to help you reach it, we have laptops and hotspots available for checkout. Laptops can be used for school, work or simply to try out. Wifi hotspots are extremely handy for when the internet is down or the power goes out. If you need both a computer and access to Wifi then try our Combos, which include a combination of a laptop and Wifi hotspot in one package. Laptops, combos and hotspots can be checked for three weeks at a time to those who are 18 years or older with a library card.

Due to popular demand, laptops, hotspots and combos can now be placed on hold online or by contacting Customer Care.

GoPro Cameras

Have you ever seen amazing videos from a first-person point of view and wondered, how did they do that? Now, you can make them yourself with GoPro Cameras available for check out at our libraries. GoPros can be loaned for up to one week at a time to those who are 18 years or older with a library card. These cameras are first come, first served, so we recommend calling Customer Care to confirm availability at your local library. Each camera kit comes with:

  • GoPro Hero 5 camera
  • Two batteries and a charger
  • One memory card
  • Collapsible tripod
  • SD card reader
  • List of our favorite free video editing software options
  • Durable case

Water & Energy Toolkits

Did you know we can lend you the tools to help make your home more energy efficient, and save money as a result? Try our Water & Energy Toolkits. Each kit includes instructions, tools and supplies to make sure your at-home water and energy use is friendly to the environment and your wallet. Some objects like the wrench and thermometer stay in the box and are returned to the library, others you get to keep, such as an LED light bulb and a replacement shower head. Check with a staff member for details and the included list of supplies.
