Library Myths
Libraries have evolved and changed in the last couple of decades. What you might have thought to be true about San Mateo County Libraries then, may be totally different now. Let’s debunk some library myths and misconceptions!
Do people still go to the library? I thought they were becoming obsolete!
Contrary to the belief that libraries are becoming obsolete, they are more ubiquitous than ever. Libraries have seamlessly embedded their services throughout the community, hosting interactive programs in the library and going out to schools and community events for outreach. They collaborate with vendors to provide diverse events. They offer extensive digital resources and databases, plus virtual programming such as author talks, guided autobiography workshops, ESL book clubs, vinyasa yoga classes and docent lectures from fine arts museums, just to name a few.
While often perceived as a place primarily for kids and students, libraries cater to all age groups, including adults, seniors, hobbyists and job seekers. This broad range of services ensures that libraries remain vital and relevant today.
Do librarians really shush everybody?
In movies, TV shows and books, librarians are often depicted as cranky, no-funny-business individuals who will shush you the moment you make a peep! But do we really do that? No! The library is for people of all ages. That means that you might see children babbling excitedly, teenagers with their heads together while they work on a project, or adults quietly taking a meeting with their headphones. While we don’t encourage loud conversations, especially in our quieter areas, we want you to feel comfortable using your voice in this space!
Libraries only have books.
Not true! Our libraries offer so much more! While we have a large collection of books for all ages, we also have movies, music and audiobooks available to check out. Additionally, our Library of Things allows you to check out equipment like Wi-Fi hotspots, Chromebooks, karaoke machines, video games, ukuleles and even bikes—all to take home!
Our libraries host a wide variety of programs each month from tech, arts and crafts, ESL language classes and skill building to name a few. Our makerspaces give you access to 3D printers, sewing machines and memory labs. Want to explore everything that’s available to you? Learn more about our makerspaces!
A library card is needed to use the library, right?
It's true that a library account is necessary to borrow items, but you don’t need a physical card to check out. You can get a digital version of your library card by downloading our mobile app. You can even use the app to check-out items at the library. If you visit the library but forget your card, no problem! Just come to the front desk and we can look you up by your name or phone number. We encourage everyone to apply for a free library card, either online or in person.
I forgot to turn in my book on time. How much is the late fee?
In 2019, San Mateo County libraries went fine free! That means that you will not be charged a late fee if you forget to turn in your book by or before its due date. If a book hasn’t been turned in for more than a few weeks, it might show up on your account as missing. A missing book generates a replacement fee, but the moment you return that late book, the fee goes away. We want you to enjoy every page, every song and every scene!
Do librarians read every book?
Different librarians have specialties in different areas. For example, some librarians specialize in children’s books while others focus in adult services. Unfortunately, we don’t have time to read every book there is. However, we do have the resources to try and help you find any kind of book that you are interested in. Don’t be afraid to ask!
San Mateo County Libraries aims to offer memorable experiences and cozy learning spots. We make discovery fun, enrich lives and boost our community with flexible spaces, cool online resources and creative programs. By bridging the digital divide and syncing with community goals, we make sure everyone gets in on the library magic!
