SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — San Mateo County Libraries invites community members of all ages to participate in the annual reading and learning program Summer Adventure 2026. Running from June 1 through August 31, this year's theme, "Dive Into a Story," encourages library visitors to explore books, discover new experiences and stay engaged in learning all summer long.
Participants can pick up a Summer Adventure activity log at any of San Mateo County Libraries' 13 community libraries or download and print one online. The program is free and open to people of all ages and abilities.
"Summer Adventure sparks curiosity, creativity and a passion for lifelong learning," said Julia Mates, Belmont Mayor and Chair of the Library Governing Board. "The program invites people of all ages to visit their community library, explore new stories and experiences, and celebrate the joy of reading, learning and discovery."
To participate, simply complete activities and challenges throughout the summer and check them off in the activity log. Challenges include reading for 60 minutes every day for a week, reading a story that includes water, introducing a friend to the library and many more. Participants who complete at least 10 different challenges can submit their log for a chance to win prizes.
Youth ages 0–18 can enter drawings to win a $1,000 scholarship or tickets to a San Francisco Giants game, while adults ages 19 and older have a chance to win a San Mateo County Parks pass.
Last year, 1,900 participants completed Summer Adventure, submitting 3,258 completed activity logs, demonstrating the community's enthusiasm for reading, learning and exploration during the summer months.
"Each year, Summer Adventure inspires thousands of people to discover something new through their library," said Anne-Marie Despain, Director for San Mateo County Libraries. "The participation shows just how much our community values opportunities to read, learn, create and connect. Our libraries are where people can discover new interests, build skills and connect with one another.”
