What’s cooler than being cool? Having a library card! September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when San Mateo County Libraries joins other public libraries across the nation to promote library services and make sure that everyone has a free library card. This year, we launched our new fine-free youth library cards.

As part of this initiative, San Mateo County Libraries collaborated with California-based illustrators Lisa Brown, opens a new windowChristian Robinson, opens a new windowJoe Cepeda, opens a new window, and Alina Chau, opens a new window to design four new library cards for kids and teens to choose. The new designs celebrate today’s public library – a place to discover an incredible assortment of activities and experiences designed to help children and teens experience the joy of reading, build a love of learning, and succeed in school.

Libraries are a training ground for students of all ages to expand their knowledge and explore creative pursuits. Owing fines is a barrier to accessing these wonderful library services, especially for families with limited financial resources.
