Born and raised on Staten Island, NY Alex Gino is an activist and advocate for LGBTQ+ communities. In 2007 Gino served as co-chair of LGBA (renamed QSA, opens a new window) at the University of Pennsylvania and serves on the board of NOLOSE, opens a new window today. Gino also serves as a member of We Need Diverse Books, opens a new window and PEN America, opens a new window. Along with George, Gino has also authored You Don't Know Everything, Jilly P!, published in 2018 and Rick in 2020. In case you’re wondering, they love glitter, ice cream, gardening, awe-ful puns, and stories that reflect the diversity and complexity of being alive.
One Book ● One County, opens a new window fosters community and discussion through literacy by inviting people to share a reading experience. The program is designed to inspire enthusiasm for reading and spark conversations that promote understanding of important social issues and topics. Research shows that when families and communities are involved, students' educational opportunities are increased as well as their academic achievement. Reading widely and often is a fundamental practice that is happening less often in our digital age but has a large effect on student achievement. A shared reading experience can promote conversations, create connections, and deepen the motivation to continue reading for other purposes.
Virtual Book Clubs for George
When people look at George, they think they see a ten-year-old boy. But she knows she’s not a boy. She knows she’s a girl. So what happens when her teacher won’t let her play Charlotte in the fourth grade’s dramatization of Charlotte’s Web?
We’d also love to see you in one of our library-led book discussions about George on Tuesday, October 13 or Monday, November 9 at 6:30 PM. You are welcome to attend the book club whether or not you’ve read the book. Both book club meetings require registration.
All participants must adhere to the San Mateo County Libraries Behavior Policies, including but not limited to refraining from disruptive behaviors and harassment of any kind.
