Typewriter Beach—A Tale of Sisterhood, Secrets and the Importance of Free Speech
A sweeping story of friendship, fame and finding your voice—Typewriter Beach follows an unlikely bond between an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and a rising actress in 1950s Hollywood, caught in the storm of McCarthyism. Set in Carmel-by-the-Sea and touching on themes of sisterhood, secrets and free speech, it’s a timely tale that spans decades, from the Golden Age of film to the #MeToo era.
Meg Waite Clayton shares about Typewriter Beach:
"I'd just moved to Carmel when I began Typewriter Beach, which is in part an homage to this magical town I now call home. And years before the #MeToo movement began in earnest, I was writing opinion pieces for major newspapers about the challenges women in Hollywood face. For even longer, I’ve been fascinated with the way rightwing elements within the US government in the 1950s used threats and intimidation to silence opposition voices, including through the Hollywood blacklisting. But when I sat down to write—after abandoning another novel I’d been working on when my father passed away—what poured out was this character named Leo, my father’s middle name. Leo isn’t my father, but his love for his granddaughter is the same complete and all-supportive love I always felt from my dad."
