Learn About Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Observed on the second Monday in October, Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors the original stewards of this land and the hundreds of Native nations that continue to shape our communities today. The holiday began as a response to Columbus Day, shifting the focus from colonial “discovery” to the long histories, knowledge systems and resilience of Indigenous peoples across the Americas.

We acknowledge that San Mateo County Libraries sit on the unceded homeland of the Muwekma Ohlone and Ramaytush peoples, who have cared for this region since time immemorial and whose descendants continue to live and thrive here.

In observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day, San Mateo County Libraries and Customer Care will be closed Sunday, October 12, and Monday, October 13. You can celebrate any time with the books, films and music highlighted below, available in both physical and digital formats. These hand-selected titles showcase Indigenous voices past and present, and our full catalog offers many more to explore.

Be sure to check back for special Native American Heritage Month programs coming in November!
