Meet Doug Sheehan, a Library Aide for San Mateo County Libraries at Belmont Library, who was recently awarded the AbilityPath Neal Poppin Award for his incredible spirit and hard work. Doug was recognized by AbilityPath due to his resilience, determination and his demonstration of the transformative power of pursuing one’s passions.
Doug's Story
Doug started working for San Mateo County Libraries in 2023. Doug has been a Library Champion from day one, and has an unshakeable determination to do his job to the best of his ability. He loves working at the Belmont Library because he is surrounded by books and people, two things that always bring a smile to his face. Outside of work, Doug is the author and illustrator of his first published book, Super Bunny and Wonder Bear. Doug enjoys exploring new places with his family, and is also working on his next book, featuring Dopey Dog and Smarty Cat.

About the Neal Poppin Award
In 2007, AbilityPath created an award in honor of Neal Poppin, a young man with cerebral palsy whose determination, spirit and enthusiasm transcended any limitations he faced. Each year at their Power of Possibilities event, AbilityPath honors his memory by presenting the Neal Poppin Award to someone who exemplifies the power of the human spirit to rise above limitations and live their best possible life.
Later this year, you'll be able to meet Doug at Belmont Library as he accomplishes his goal of hosting a storytime reading of his book, Super Bunny and Wonder Bear. Congratulations on being this year’s Neal Poppin Award winner, Doug! We are lucky to have you as a part of San Mateo County Libraries.
