Happy Pride Month! Each year in June, people around the world gather to celebrate the vibrant and multi-faceted LGBTQ+ community. Celebrated in some form since 1970, Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall Uprising, opens a new window, which took place over five turbulent nights in 1969.
Our libraries are hosting exciting and engaging Pride programs, opens a new window all June long. Whether you join us for a special LGBTQ+ book club or fake cake workshop, we hope your Pride celebrations are colorful and full of joy!
Express Yourself With Pride
Creating handmade art can boost your mental health, and community-centric art inspires visibility and connection. Historically, LGBTQ+ communities have made zines (short for magazines) to express themselves with homemade booklets ready to distribute. Zine topics can range from politics and art to personal, unique stories that only you can tell! Learn more about our zine workshops.
Each way that we celebrate Pride tells a story. For local artist Valerie Liu, teaching people how to make traditional paper mache dolls called Pyit Taing Htangs connect a Burmese symbol of resistance and resilience with a self-expressive art form that’s perfect for Pride month. Sign up for a Pyit Taing Htangs workshop today.
Celebrate With Style
This year, everyone’s invited to show off their colors!
For adults, make vibrant jewelry and earrings using upcycled bases with paint, gems, flowers and stickers to celebrate love for the LGBTQ+ community. You can also design a mixed media collage with a short reflection on the Stonewall Uprising of 1969.
Kids and families will love making colorful hairclips and keychains to wear anytime of year—but especially Pride month!
Be on the lookout for more Pride programming, like solving Pride Month lockbox challenges and making rainbow fans, no-sew tutus and Pride tassels.
