Black History Month 2026: A Century of Black History Commemorations

This year marks 100 years of national Black History celebrations! Come celebrate this year’s theme, A Century of Black History Commemorations, at San Mateo County Libraries.

100 years ago, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) was established to teach and commemorate Black History. ASALH later paved the way for the federal recognition of Black History Month every February. As we celebrate the incredible triumphs, heroes and contributions in Black History, we not only remember our past, but also contemplate our future. We imagine the limitless possibilities of the next 100 years, and commit to contributing to a future that uplifts, celebrates and honors all people.
