When you think of the library, you might imagine shelves stacked with books or a cozy Storytime for the kids. But what if we told you that the library offers far more than that? At San Mateo County Libraries, we’ve reimagined what a library can be—a space not just for reading but for creativity, hands-on learning and unique experiences.
From rug tufting, beading and Mayan Backstrap Weaving to nail design workshops, our libraries are buzzing with programs that may surprise you. Whether you’re looking to learn a new craft, develop a skill or try something different, we’ve got a variety of untraditional programs designed with you in mind.
Rug Tufting: Create Your Own Cozy Masterpiece
If you’re a fan of DIY projects or looking for a fresh, creative outlet, our rug tufting workshops are the perfect opportunity. This trendy craft allows you to design and create your own custom rugs, from bold patterns to personalized designs. Our workshops are beginner-friendly, so no previous experience is needed—just bring your imagination!
Join us at various locations, but be sure to sign up early, as spaces are limited. Participants aged 13-17 must attend with an adult, and together, you can create a rug as a team.

Beading Workshop: Connect with Culture and Creativity
Beading is an art form rich in history, practiced by Indigenous communities worldwide. In our Beading Workshop, you’ll learn to make a beautiful Huichol-style flower, which can be turned into earrings, necklace pendants or keychain charms. This meditative and culturally meaningful program offers more than just a creative outlet—it’s a healing process that helps improve mental wellness while connecting with ancestral traditions.
Open to ages 15 and older, this two-hour workshop is perfect for anyone looking to learn a meaningful craft in a welcoming environment.

Sashiko Workshop: Breathe New Life into Your Clothes
Sashiko—which translates into little stabs—is an embroidery technique developed in the Edo period in Japan. It became not only a decorative practice, but also one used to mend and repair clothing. In this workshop, mixed-media artist, author and educator Lisa Solomon will demonstrate how to give your clothes a new life and extend their use.
You'll get an overview of essential supplies and learn interior and exterior patchwork techniques while experimenting with simple and intricate designs. Bring a piece of clothing in need of repair or practice with the materials provided.
Open to teens and adults, this workshop is a great opportunity to embrace sustainability, slow fashion and creative craftsmanship.
