Atherton Library Moves to Temporary Space in Preparation for New Library


Exciting plans are underway for the much-anticipated new Atherton Library Project! On August 17, Atherton Town Council, opens a new window approved city staff to move forward with preparing a bid package to demolish and abate the current Atherton Library in November. In preparation of this work, the current Atherton Library located at 2 Dinkelspiel Station Lane, Atherton, CA 94027, opens a new window will be closing on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 5:00 PM. A new temporary space will open Monday, October 22, 2018 at 10:00 AM.

All checked out materials due during the week-long closure will be automatically extended and due after the temporary location opens.

The Library will move to a 2,880 sq. ft. modular building that sits on the current site. We will offer many of the same services including public access computers, printer, public copier, self-checkout station, and 3D printing services. Patrons can still browse through our collection of non-fiction and fiction books, DVDs, music CDs, a small children’s collection as well as pick up patron holds and LINK+ items. Library programming and events will take place at schools, Holbrook Palmer Park and other venues in Town.

The Atherton Library Project is a collaborative effort between San Mateo County Libraries and the Town of Atherton, opens a new window. Patrons can expect the new Library to include flexible, blended, multi-use spaces which can be readily adapted. Plans include a dedicated quiet reading area, expanded children’s area, multiple meeting rooms, a makerspace and much more.

The Town of Atherton will be requesting new Library bids this winter and the project will be awarded in the Spring of 2019. The new Library grand opening projected date is estimated for 2021.
