An Interview With SMCL’s Kelly Reinaker

The San Mateo County Libraries' staff LOVE engaging our youngest visitors with fun storytimes and active learning programs! So who are these multi-talented and enthusiastic staff in Youth Services?

Meet Kelly

Let's find out about East Palo Alto Library's Kelly Reinaker and what inspires her!

Where Are You From?

"I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio! I moved to the Bay Area in August of 2015 and started working as the Youth Services Librarian here at the East Palo Alto Library, opens a new window in September."

What Inspired You to Work in Libraries?

"Good question! When I was a student at The Ohio State University I had the opportunity to work in one of the libraries on campus. Years later, while working as an educational aide at an elementary school, I found myself wanting to further my education and, having had that experience working at a university library, I decided that I would study to become a librarian. I’d say my greatest inspiration comes from being able to help all kinds of people in many different ways."

What Do You Do at SMCL and Where Can We Find You?

"I am the Youth Services Librarian at the East Palo Alto Library and there are many things that I do! I spend a lot of time working with children and their families, planning story times and running programs , as well as visiting area preschools and participating in community events. I also get to travel to attend workshops and conferences. You can usually find me at the EPA library, but don’t be surprised if you see me elsewhere!"

What Do You Like Most About Your Job?

"Helping people and being able to try new things!"

What Would You Tell People About Libraries That They Might Not Know?

"I’m already telling them! I tell people I’m a librarian and how libraries are changing for the better more and more each day! I think many people are unaware of the awesome things, opens a new window that libraries and librarians are doing today, so I like to give real examples to demonstrate this point, and hopefully inspire them to check out their local library."

What Are Your Hobbies?

"I love riding my bicycle, listening to music, and exploring the Bay Area’s natural beauty, especially the coast! I also started skateboarding recently and have been embracing the challenge. Dancing and drawing are other activities I enjoy."
