Adult Learning: Achieving Dreams Through Connections

Written by: Araceli E.  with Adult Services

California has one of the lowest levels of adult basic skills in the nation—about 28% of the state’s adults read below a third-grade level, and San Mateo County is no different.

At San Mateo County Libraries, we are proud to offer programs to support adult learners. Our libraries provide personalized one-on-one tutoring in reading and writing, along with English classes, conversation clubs and much more.

In 2023, 133 tutor-learner pairs improved their skills to accomplish goals like:

  • Gaining a new job or promotion
  • Passing the citizenship test
  • Obtaining their driver’s license
  • Learning all the letters/sounds

Lasting Connections

All of our tutors and learners are inspiring, and celebrate the power of this journey in their own ways. The dedication and hard work we see in this program remind us that anyone can reach their goals and take meaningful steps toward a brighter future with the right support.

Meg and Flor

Meg and Flor were paired for one-on-one tutoring in 2012 and recently celebrated 12 years together working out of the Half Moon Bay Library! Just two years after Flor arrived from Mexico, she began meeting with Meg once a week. During their work together, Flor has reached many milestones: she has obtained her driver’s license, started a family and got a job! Flor and Meg have become friends, and now Meg even helps Flor’s daughter study for her high school science classes.

“I want to thank the library and Meg for the tutoring program. Without them, I would still have a huge language barrier in my daily life."

Larry

Like many of our literacy tutors, Larry is over 60, recently retired and is seeking opportunities to make a difference. Through the library's literacy program, Larry found opportunities to connect with others in their community and create new friendships.

“When I retired, I was happy to find the literacy program at the library to do something meaningful."
