A Peek at My Summer Outreach Internship at the Pacifica Libraries

At San Mateo County Libraries, we love to offer our community opportunities for learning and growth. This can be through programs and library materials, but also through volunteer opportunities and internships. This summer, we provided internship opportunities to dozens of high school students across San Mateo County. We'd like to introduce you to one of those Summer Learning Interns as she shares her transformative summer internship experience. 

Hannah's Story

My name is Hannah, I am currently a Summer Intern at the Pacifica locations of San Mateo County Libraries. While I could have explored other options for a summer job, this internship felt right at home to me because the Pacifica libraries have played a significant role in my love for reading and learning. I have been visiting the library since early childhood, and I can vividly recall sitting on the rug during Storytime or gleefully petting the dog sitting in my lap during Paws for Tales. Getting the chance to now work at a place that impacted my life in such a positive way has been extremely fulfilling! 

One of my favorite internship tasks has been assisting with Storytime programs. Being in a sea of kids who are listening intently and following along with the songs is so much fun. I love being part of such a positive program that I know from my own experience, will impact children’s lives in the best ways and leave them with happy memories at their library. I have also been excited to assist with Junior Rangers programming and learn about how libraries can partner with other community organizations to offer events outside the library. It has been eye-opening to learn that each task I complete is much more than what it looks like on the surface, and I have a greater appreciation for the time it takes to plan and provide library programs and services to our community. 

Overall, this summer internship has been a wonderful experience of learning and discovery. From creating crafts for our art tables, to helping with library programs both inside and outside of the library, each moment has helped to teach me about leadership and given me the chance to connect with and give back to my community.
