SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — San Mateo County Libraries is excited to open its first Library Outpost, a user-friendly 24/7 automated vending machine that will expand access to library services.

The lending machine, located outside the Pacifica Sanchez Library, will enable community members to browse, select and return books and media, plus pick up holds beyond regular library hours.

San Mateo County Libraries and the City of Pacifica will celebrate the opening of the new Library Outpost with a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, July 23, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Built in partnership with the City of Pacifica, the Library Outpost provides an innovative solution to increasing library access. More than 300 materials will be offered in the Library Outpost at any given time. Library staff will curate the collection inside the machine to include picks for children and adults, ensuring what’s available is frequently updated and reflects the interests and needs of the community.

“The Library Outpost does something really wonderful—which is make physical collection items available to borrow 24/7,” Tygarjas Bigstyck, Library Governing Board Member and Pacifica Councilmember, said. “Patrons can come whenever it's convenient for their schedule to find something new or choose to pick up their holds.”

Featuring a simple touch screen and step-by-step directions listed right on the machine, the Library Outpost will offer a user-friendly experience. Approaching the Outpost will feel like using a vending machine, ATM or other familiar automated device—with the promise of a great book to read or DVD to watch at the end.

The new, inviting space extends the library’s offerings outdoors, with sustainable furniture allowing patrons a place to read and connect, have lunch or access free WiFi.

“This is such an exciting first for San Mateo County Libraries, and we can’t wait to bring new Library Outposts to more of our communities in the future,” Karen Cunningham, Library JPA Governing Board Chair and Brisbane Mayor Pro Tempore, said.
