Have you seen the trailer for Thor: Ragnarok yet? It’s already Marvel and Disney’s most viewed trailer, opens a new window in 24 hours.
The trailer is our first look at footage from the new Thor film and it looks amazing! The film is directed by New Zealander Taika Watiti, opens a new window, mostly known for his indie comedies. Thor: Ragnarok will be his first big budget blockbuster. His previous films include Hunt for the Wilderpeople and the hilariously awkward What We Do in the Shadows (in which Watiti also starred.)
In an Entertainment Weekly interview, opens a new window, Watiti cited movies that inspired the tone of the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok. The zany action took major inspiration from Big Trouble in Little China. Reports say there will be a buddy comedy vibe with Thor and the Hulk influenced by buddy comedies like Planes, Trains and Automobiles, 48 Hrs and Withnail and I.
Of course inspiration was also drawn from previous Marvel movies. The first Thor movie, directed by Kenneth Branagh, opens a new window, introduced us to the heroic Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, opens a new window, and fan favorite Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, opens a new window. The last time we saw Thor and the Hulk was in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Both heroes were conspicuously absent from the recent Captain America: Civil War, although we know what Thor was up to, opens a new window. A ton of Thor: Ragnarok is taking place in space, which will be inspired by Guardians of the Galaxy.
There will also be inspiration from past and present marvel comics. In the most recent Thor comics, Thor has become unworthy of his hammer and a mysterious heroine has taken up the mantle of Thor.
If you want more Loki then check out Journey Into Mystery. It follows Loki after he returns from the dead in the form of a child without past Loki's memories. Sounds like a great opportunity for a fresh start right? Only if the rest of Asgard lets him.
Thor: Ragnarok will also draw from the Planet Hulk story-line. It makes some major changes by adding Thor to the mix but there are definite similarities.
