Sustainable Art Programming for Adults

Written by: Katie W. at the Pacifica Libraries

April is Earth Month, and this year, San Mateo County Libraries has collaborated with Bay Area organizations to bring sustainable adult art programs to you.

Meet SCRAP SF

SCRAP, opens a new window is a non-profit creative reuse center and arts education nonprofit founded in 1976 in San Francisco, California. SCRAP breathes new life into old arts and crafts supplies and reduces waste by diverting over 200 tons of materials heading to landfill every year.

At the intersection of the environment, art and education, SCRAP is a Bay Area resource for makers of all ages, and everyone who values access to creative experiences. Their mission is to put the materials and methods of art-making in reach of all. Their passion is creative reuse—turning everyday objects into beautiful projects that fuel our spirit and bolster environmental awareness.

SCRAP programs aren't just happening in April! Click the links below to find an event date, time and location that works for you.

Create From Reused and Plant Materials

Clay Tile Plant Pressings

Celebrate the Earth by creating beautiful pressings into clay tiles with plants! Learn how to make ceramic tiles using plants or flowers from around your neighborhood. In this workshop, we will guide you through working with air dry clay, rolling it into slabs and creating impressions of plants to make decorative clay tiles. Registration is required.

Fabric Accessories with SCRAP

Engage your creative juices while adorning yourself in creative ways! In this creative workshop, we will upcycle fabric scraps and yarn into your new go-to jewelry accessory. Participants will delve into techniques for crafting textile jewelry including tassel making and fabric wrapping. By seamlessly blending these fiber art methods with upcycled pieces you'll create one-of-a-kind, tactile statement pieces that exude irresistible charm. No prior jewelry-making experience is necessary, but registration is required.

Gelli Printing

Learn about printing with Gelli plates, an easy DIY printmaking process! We will learn how to create textures and layers with Gelli plates and household and natural materials, as well as how to transfer images from magazines. The Gelli plates we will be using do not contain any animal products and are non-toxic. Join us to explore this fun and open-ended printmaking process! Registration is required.
