What motivated you to join the literacy program?
- “I joined the literacy program because I wanted to help people build stronger English skills. I know how much language can impact someone’s opportunities in school, work and daily life. It’s very meaningful to me to support learners as they gain confidence and find their voice in a new language.” — Sejal, Tutor
- “When I decided to take classes at my community college, I realized that I needed support, which motivated me to join the literacy program. It was challenging for me because the courses were conducted in English, and I am still learning the language. Therefore, I reached out for help at the library, where I found a wonderful tutor who has been guiding me throughout this journey.” — Angelica, Learner
- “Because I wanted to further my education. Since I had a car accident I had a lot of free time on my hand. I am hoping in the future that I can go into a new career.” — Eric, Learner
What's been your proudest achievement so far?
- “Over the past three years in this program, I was able to get my ECE (Early Childhood Education) certificate, my Master Teacher certification in ECE and of course, my Associate of Science Degree! These certifications will allow me to advance in my career and salary.” — Angelica, Learner
- “Seeing my learner submit a written composition of a " Letter to the Author" for this year's annual Writer To Writer contest, describing how the library book she was reading made her feel, and how it affected her life.” — Richard, Tutor
- “When I passed my citizenship exam and when I can read with my coworkers.” — Adriana, Learner
What difference has tutoring or learning made in your everyday life?
- “Tutoring has had a profound impact on my daily life. Without my tutor’s guidance, I doubt I would have pursued my educational goals. She inspired me to keep studying and helped me accomplish more than I ever imagined. When I first began, my children were just starting middle school. They watched me spend long hours studying, and I believe it has influenced them as well. Now that they are in high school, I feel proud to have set an example and become a role model for them.” — Angelica, Learner
- “Tutoring has added something really meaningful to my routine. It gives me a chance to slow down, connect with someone, and share in their progress. It’s become one of the most rewarding parts of my week.” — Sejal, Tutor
- “It has helped my reading comprehension so much. And it motivates me to continue on my journey.” — Eric, Learner
What's your favorite memory from your time together?
- “Hearing stories about JK's vacation and seeing the pictures. Also, hearing funny things he tells me about.” — Miriam, Tutor
- “We always find time in our hard work to also laugh about things.” — Diana, Tutor
- “The first time that we played Bananagrams.” — Eric, Learner

- “It's self motivated, so you need to know what you really want to learn. It's important to know your own goals and to share them with your tutor.” — Vivi, Learner
- “I would say don't have preconceptions, but rather try to find out what the learner wants to get out of the tutoring and go from there.” — Nancy, Tutor
Is there anything else you would like to share?
