Festive and Free 3D Printing at the Library

3D printers are taking the world by storm! 3D printers are used today to print everyday trinkets, food and even houses. Though the 3D printers we have at our community libraries aren’t that sophisticated, they’re still great for making perfect holiday decorations and gifts.

How Does 3D Printing Work?

Our Ultimaker 3D printers use an extrusion process called FFF, or fused filament fabrication, which means it creates the print using melted materials and builds it layer by layer. Think about 3D printing like a construction worker building a wall brick by brick, or layering pasta to make lasagna. Essentially, a 3D printer has a spool of plastic or filament inserted into a tube down a very hot printer head. The printer head will melt the plastic and start your print layer by layer until it reaches the top.

Using a 3D printer, you can make festive holiday decorations or beautiful holidays gifts like a 3D printed snowman or candy cane!

Make an Appointment

Good news! Making an appointment to use a 3D printer at any of our thirteen San Mateo County Libraries is as easy as using a 3D printer!
