San Mateo County Libraries first welcomed our library pets in May 2023 with the Bug Out at the Library program! Since then, our pets have created opportunities to inspire curiosity and cultivate appreciation of nature.
Banjo at Belmont Library
Banjo is a 4-year-old Brazilian whiteknee tarantula that resides in Belmont Library. This Virgo loves reading, listening to music and entertaining library visitors. During the Belmont Library Closure, Banjo is vacationing with their siblings at the Belmont manager’s home.
Papa Roach, Jellybean, King Julian and Little Skittles at the Pacifica Libraries
Papa Roach, Jellybean, King Julian and Little Skittles are among the Pacifica Libraries' family of hissing cockroaches! These wingless, down-to-earth critters like singing, warm weather and good vegetarian food.
The Queen and Her Minions at Woodside Library
The Queen and her Minions are a colony of harvester ants. The Queen established her domain at Woodside Library in early 2023. The colony digs spring cleaning, working hard and weightlifting seeds. They keep a very tidy castle and love decorating it seasonally!
Godzilla at San Carlos Library
Godzilla (Zilly) was an Asian mantis that inhabited San Carlos Library. He enjoyed climbing, eating beetles and long walks on the leaf. He passed away this April at the astonishing age of 2! That’s six months longer than the average lifespan of his species. Rest in peace, Godzilla, and may your memory be a blessing!
