Celebrating Transgender Day of Visibility

Written By: Dorian at Belmont Library

Since 2009, March 31 has been recognized as International Transgender Day of Visibility, or TDOV. TDOV invites communities to dedicate time to celebrate the lives of trans folks, acknowledge the ways they enrich our culture and spread awareness for the challenges that they face due to social and legal discrimination.

Transgender is a term that encompasses a wealth of gender identities and experiences. This includes those whose gender identity, presentation or expression differs from their sex assigned at birth. According to the Williams Institute of UCLA, opens a new window, transgender adults account for an estimated 0.5% of the adult population of the US, while transgender youth comprise around 1.4% of their age demographic.

Everyone is Welcome at the Library

At San Mateo County Libraries, opens a new window, we listen to our community and create responsive services and spaces where everyone belongs. We strive to ensure staff, collections, programs and library spaces reflect our communities. This includes welcoming trans community members into all our locations, opens a new window and providing access to materials that reflect and celebrate trans experiences.

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating Transgender Day of Visibility by browsing our displays, attending our LGBTQ+ Book Club, making pronoun pins in our Makerspaces and exploring our online collections!
