It's time to celebrate Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights! Diwali is a major Hindu festival celebrated in India, across the world and within our communities at San Mateo County Libraries. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
The festival typically lasts five days, with each day having its own significance, rituals and customs. Homes are cleaned, decorated with rangoli and illuminated with lights, including oil lamps called diyas. Observers wear new clothes, exchange gifts and sweets and gather for feasts and fireworks.
The dates Diwali is celebrated depends on the Hindu lunar calendar, falling on what is considered the darkest night of the year. Here at San Mateo County Libraries, we will be celebrating Diwali with events throughout October and November! Read about the highlights below and discover our full list of Diwali events.

The program is family-friendly, educational and inclusive, designed to welcome audiences of all ages and backgrounds. See when Laya Arts Collective is coming to a library near you!
