2023 Peninsula Libraries Comic Arts Fest
The 7th Annual Peninsula Libraries Comic Arts Fest is returning in April 2023! We’re celebrating the importance of comics, both as an art form and as valid literature, and enabling aspiring artists and readers of all ages through author visits, workshops, and comics-related programs.
PLCAF has held engaging comics events since 2015, hosting many great well-established authors, as well as budding debut authors. We’ve also held Small Press Comics Expos highlighting local creators and workshops for writing and illustrating. We’re excited to bring in-person events back for our fellow comic fans in 2023!
We’ll be having events at all libraries throughout San Mateo County: Burlingame Library, opens a new window, Daly City Library, opens a new window, Menlo Park Library, opens a new window, Redwood City Library, opens a new window, San Bruno Library, opens a new window, San Mateo County Libraries, opens a new window, San Mateo Public Library, opens a new window, and South San Francisco Library, opens a new window.

Author Nidhi Chanani, opens a new window is a freelance illustrator, cartoonist, and author. Her graphic novels Pashmina and Jukebox received starred reviews and have been selected for many best of lists, including the American Library Association's Top Ten Great Graphic Novels. Nidhi will discuss her path to comics, her creative process for writing and drawing, and finish with an interactive drawing demonstration. Free books for kids while supplies last. Registration required, two persons per registration.

With comics as an integral part of his immigrant experience, author Thien Pham, opens a new window will discuss the importance of superheroes, TV, and comics in the life of immigrant kids and talk about how he returned to the comfort of the comic medium to tell his refugee story. Thien Pham is a graphic novelist, comic artist, and educator based in Oakland, CA. He is the author and illustrator of the graphic novel Sumo and did the art for the middle-grade graphic novel Level Up, written by Gene Luen Yang. His upcoming memoir, Family Style, is out June 2023.

Her work, published by Nickelodeon/Dark Horse, Short Box, Beyond Anthologies and more, explores themes of identity, queer romance, soft sci-fi and anti-capitalist futures.

Join us for a documentary about a dynamic group of fictional and real-life superheroines, followed by a discussion with a literature professor and artist!
Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines, opens a new window is an award-winning documentary exploring the concept of heroic women, from the birth of the superhero in the 1940s to the TV and big-screen action blockbusters of today. After we watch the film, we’ll discuss it with artist and writer Ajuan Mance, Ph.D, opens a new window., Professor of African American Literature at Mills College in Oakland.
Wonder Women! looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society’s anxieties about strong and healthy women. The film goes behind the scenes with actors Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman) and Lindsay Wagner (the Bionic Woman), comic writers and artists, and real-life superheroines such as feminist icon Gloria Steinem, riot grrrl Kathleen Hanna, and others, who offer an enlightening and entertaining counterpoint to the male-dominated superhero genre.
Ajuan Mance is a Professor of African American literature at Mills College in Oakland, California. A lifelong artist and writer, Ajuan has participated in solo and group exhibitions as well as comic and zine fests, from the Bay Area to Brooklyn. In her art, illustration, and comics, Ajuan uses humor and bright colors to explore race, gender, power, and the people and places in which they intersect. Her work has appeared in a number of digital and print media outlets, including, most recently, The Women’s Review of Books, Blavity.com, BET.com, Transition Magazine, Buzzfeed.com, KQED.org, the San Francisco Chronicle, NYTimes.com, KPIX News, and Publisher’s Weekly.
Dr. Mance’s books include Living While Black: Portraits of Everyday Resistance, 1001 Black Men: Portraits of Masculinity at the Intersections, and Gender Studies: The Confessions of an Accidental Outlaw.
