Join San Mateo County Libraries in celebrating Welcoming Week!

Welcoming Week, which will take place from September 13 to 22 this year, is a joyful nationwide celebration led by Welcoming America., opens a new window It brings together neighbors from all walks of life to create strong, inclusive communities. We’re thrilled that San Mateo County Libraries will be part of this exciting event, with activities that showcase our shared commitment to diversity and belonging.

In collaboration with the San Mateo County Office of Community Affairs, opens a new window, we’re hosting three special storytimes designed to spark meaningful connections and inspire community spirit. We had the pleasure of speaking with Sarah Feldman, MSW, an Immigrant Services Coordinator with the San Mateo County Office of Community Affairs, who shared heartfelt insights on the importance of Welcoming Week and how everyone can join in making our communities feel open, valued and truly welcoming for all.

What excites you most about Welcoming Week, and why do you think it’s so important for our community?

Sarah Feldman, MSW: My favorite part of Welcoming Week is the opportunity to bring community together. San Mateo County is home to so much rich diversity, and Welcoming Week provides an opportunity to celebrate that diversity alongside our neighbors.

How does the work you do with immigrant services connect with the spirit of Welcoming Week?

The Immigrant Services team is focused on connecting immigrants in our community to resources. We work closely with County departments and community partners to respond to the needs of immigrant communities and promote belonging and inclusion throughout San Mateo County. Welcoming Week is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate immigrants, uplift the incredible welcoming work that is already taking place and demonstrate a commitment to fostering a culture in which we all belong.

Are there any special events or programs you’re looking forward to during this year’s Welcoming Week?

This year, SMC Immigrant Services will be partnering with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to host our fourth Naturalization Oath Ceremony on September 17, which is Citizenship Day. The Oath Ceremony is the final step in naturalization, which is the process for immigrants to become U.S. Citizens. In fact, the majority of immigrants in San Mateo County are naturalized citizens. We are honored to host this ceremony and look forward to celebrating newly naturalized Americans!

How can libraries like ours play a bigger role in fostering a welcoming environment for immigrants?

Our libraries do incredible work to make San Mateo County a welcoming place—from hosting English classes and citizenship workshops, to featuring multilingual books and activities, to serving as hubs of information. We are fortunate to have a library system here in SMC that is attuned to our newcomer communities.

What’s one thing you’d encourage people to do to help create a more inclusive and welcoming community?

I would encourage people to do something I have challenged myself to do as well—whether someone is new to your neighborhood, workplace or classroom, go introduce yourself and say hello. Most of us have been the new person in a space at one time or another, and it can be scary! We all have a role to play in making our communities a safe and welcoming place to belong.
