How To Make Christina Tosi’s Birthday Cookies

Whether you're celebrating a birthday, a special anniversary, or simply need a pick-me-up on a Sunday afternoon, birthday cookies are one of the best ways to help you do so! A few months ago, I wrote a blog about how Christina Tosi, opens a new window became one of my shelter-in-place MVPs for creating an amazingly welcoming and informative virtual space, known as Bake Club, opens a new window, to share her delicious recipes using her Instagram, opens a new window account. So it only makes sense that I continue my "How To" series with one of my favorite Christina Tosi recipes: the birthday cookie.

This particular birthday cookie recipe comes from Christina's recently released book, Milk Bar: Kids Only, where all of the recipes are specifically tailored to be inclusive to any level of baker and to inspire a young imagination. If you have kids at home or maybe don't consider yourself the most bake-savvy person (like I do), I absolutely recommend this book ... your tastebuds can thank me later!

How to Do It Yourself

What you'll need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons nonfat milk powder (okay to skip if you don't have, but totally recommend it)
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt (regular salt works too, just use a little less)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter (make sure they are soft at room temp)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 (12-ounce) bag white chocolate chips
