Get Tax Help at the Library

It's that time of year again: Tax season! To avoid last-minute panic and potential filing fees, plan to start early, because the sooner you file, the sooner you can potentially receive that refund. The deadline for filing taxes this year is Tuesday, April 15, 2024, opens a new window. That is also the deadline date to request an extension for 2023 tax returns. The IRS has a step-by-step guide on how to file your taxes, as well as information specific to California.

When getting started, it's best to gather all of your essential documents first. This includes W-2s, 540 forms, 1040 forms, receipts for deductible expenses and any other paperwork related to your income and deductions.

Tax Resources at the Library

Some of our libraries received tax forms in February - please check your local branch for current availability. You can also use our Print Anywhere service to print forms (25 pages per day max).

The Belmont Library will once again be providing tax preparation assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, administered by the IRS.

As a part of VITA, local agencies provide free tax prep assistance. At Belmont Library, United Way Bay Area, opens a new window provides free assistance, every Saturday from February 10 until April 13. VITA offers free tax help to: 

  • People who generally make an income of $64,000 or less (no rental property income or cryptocurrency income)
  • Persons with disabilities; and 
  • Limited English-speaking taxpayers 

You can make an appointment in any of these three ways: 

  • send an email, OR
  • call VITA at 650-440-6150 and leave a voicemail with your information, OR
  • call SMCL's Customer Care at 1-833-YES-SMCL (1-833-937-7625) and ask to be transferred to the Belmont Library

Once you have secured an appointment, you will need to pick up an envelope from the Belmont Library information desk containing forms and a document checklist that you need to complete before your appointment time.
