Learn a New Language in the New Year

Have you ever wanted to learn a new language, but haven’t had the time, motivation, or resources? San Mateo County Libraries can help! Mango Languages, opens a new window, available with your SMCL card (Requires "29041" card.), is a free online language learning program. You can learn up to 17 languages (including Pirate!) if you’re feeling really ambitious – or you could just stick to one. Mango teaches sentence structure, pronunciation, useful phrases, and cultural insights. Mango also has mobile apps for iOS, opens a new window, Android, opens a new window, and Kindle Fire, opens a new window so you can take it with you if you’re traveling or learn during your commute. Oh, and it’s really fun, too!

To help you get started, Mango has kicked off a campaign for January called #31DaysofLanguage. Each day is a different activity to help you stay motivated during your language conquering quest. For example, on January 25, you're supposed to share a line from your favorite song in the language you'd like to learn. Even if you start mid-way through the month, you can go back and do some of these activities at another time.

If audiobooks are your preferred way to learn, San Mateo County Libraries has many in our collection that can help you speak a new language. Here are just a few:

Pimsleur Language Programs

Dr. Blair's Spanish in No Time
