The San Mateo County Library is about to commence its fifth annual adult summer reading club, offering this age group the same opportunities as children to celebrate the pleasure of leisurely reading and to reap the rewards of earning fun prizes for doing so. This year’s theme is “Transform Your World at the Library.”
We organize this seasonal program for several reasons. Studies have shown that children whose parents read are more likely to become readers themselves. Additionally, many working people who don’t have the time to participate in a regularly scheduled monthly book group are able to visit our libraries as their schedules permit and share their favorite books via the libraries’ community reading boards.
The rules are relaxed: participants set individual reading goals to reach by the end of summer. As they complete a book or audio book, they submit the title and a brief comment to be posted, and a raffle ticket to be drawn for weekly prizes. In keeping with our theme of transforming the world, eco-friendly prizes include free tickets to the California Academy of Sciences, free subscriptions to Organic Gardening Magazine, and free annual passes to the California State Parks. Special events include “Start a Low-Carbon Diet,” a presentation designed to teach fun and effective ways to reduce our carbon footprints; and “How to Green Your Home,” a presentation designed to help increase home energy efficiency.
While we encourage adults to select their summer reading material according to their individual tastes, there is one book we’re especially promoting. What is the What by Dave Eggers has been selected for San Mateo County’s third fall community reading program, “One Book, One Community: San Mateo County Reads”. It was on the New York Times Best Seller List for weeks and was nominated for a National Book Award in 2006. It tells the riveting story of a lost Sudanese boy who sought refuge from his country’s civil war in America. The kick-off event on October 1, 2008 at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center features Eggers in conversation with KQED talk show host Michael Krasny. Additional programs designed to extend the themes of the book will take place at all libraries throughout the county during the entire month of October. Stay tuned for more details.
Don’t miss these eco-friendly programs!
