If you haven’t participated in the San Mateo County Library adult summer reading club, there’s still plenty of time to do so. This year’s theme is “Transform Your World at the Library.”
The rules are relaxed: participants set individual reading goals to reach by the end of summer. As they complete a book or audio book, they submit the title and a brief comment to be posted, and a raffle ticket to be drawn for weekly prizes. In keeping with our theme of transforming the world, eco-friendly prizes include free tickets to the California Academy of Sciences, free subscriptions to Organic Gardening Magazine, and free annual passes to the California State Parks. Special events include “Start a Low-Carbon Diet,” a presentation designed to teach fun and effective ways to reduce our carbon footprints; and “How to Green Your Home,” a presentation designed to help increase home energy efficiency.
Art can be tremendously transformative so we’ve also scheduled two popular de Young Museum slide talks. “Chihuly at the deYoung” is an exploration of the exquisite glass artwork of Dale Chihuly. Chihuly’s first major exhibition in San Francisco represents the breadth and scope of the artist’s creative vision over the last four decades. “Women Impressionists: Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassat, Eva Gonzales, Marie Bracquemond” brings together, for the first time in the United States, these groundbreaking artists. Please see the schedule below for the program nearest you.
See you at the library!
"Breaking News"...CBS Channel 5 Eyewitness News with Consumer News reporter Jeanette Pavini did a wonderful piece focusing on two local libraries, including the Belmont Library. Footage of the "two new libraries" of the 21st century focused on the theme of economic downturn/revitalized use of public libraries and featured active storytime, community resource amenities, facilities, cafes, marketplaces, etc. Check out this video report.
Need to clean out your scrap booking closet, have your kids outgrown all their old art supplies, do you have left over sewing scraps? Donate craft items for an after storytime activity at East Palo Alto and other outreach sites.
Some ideas…old greeting cards, shoe boxes, oatmeal boxes with lids, colored markers, crayons, pens and pencils, washable paints, playing cards with pretty backs (doesn’t need to be a complete set), stamps (both for using with stamp pads and interesting used postal stamps), stickers, card stock, jigsaw puzzle pieces, paint brushes, craft idea books, beads, charms, colorful scarves, old whole seed spices like cloves, cardamom, etc., glass spice jars, scrap booking odds and ends, small plastic medicine cups, cardboard jewelry boxes, clear plastic shoe boxes, fabric scraps, yarns and large sewing needles
