August is Art Appreciation Month and the San Mateo County Libraries will be offering two excellent programs celebrating current exhibitions at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The Docent Council presents a unique slide talk: Women Impressionists: Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzales, Marie Bracquemond; bringing together for the first time the collective work of these four artists, on view at the Legion of Honor from June 21 to September 21, 2008.
The Docent Council will also be bringing you Chilhuly at the DeYoung. Chihuly’s first major exhibition in San Francisco represents the breadth and scope of the artist’s work in a feast of bold color and dramatic forms.
If you’re an art lover we also have an exciting program scheduled for September. In honor of Latino Heritage Month, docents from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will present a visually stimulating presentation on their current exhibition of the work of Frida Kahlo on:
The temporary Portola Valley will close its doors on Tuesday, August 19, 2008. The Library is open 12-7 pm that day. Items checked out from the temporary Portola Valley Library will be due back on Monday, September 22, 2008. In addition, renewals can be taken care of online at smcl.org; or by phone at 650-638-0399. Note that items can be returned to any public library in San Mateo County. The nearest libraries, however, are the Woodside Library at 3140 Woodside Road, Woodside and the Menlo Park Library at 800 Alma Street in Menlo Park. After August 19th, users may pick up their holds at the Woodside Library at 3140 Woodside Road in Woodside. And, of course, additional library services are always available at smcl.org.
Portola Valley patrons are welcome to use all of the public libraries in San Mateo County during this closure as they look forward to the opening of the new Portola Valley Library in the new Portola Valley Town Center at 765 Portola Road on Monday, September 15, 2008. Library hours in the new library location will be Monday-Thursday, 12-7 pm, Friday and Saturday, 12-5 pm, closed on Sunday.
Once again our Library has teamed up with RIF and Macy’s fall fundraising drive, Book a Brighter Future. Visit any Macy’s this month, purchase a $3 shopping pass and get $10 off your next Macy’s purchase of $50 or more. Macy’s will donate the entire $3 to RIF! RIF is the largest funder for our Reach Out and Read program which distributes a free book and important information about how to read to young children at eight Pediatric Clinics serving low-income or under-served children and families in San Mateo County. RIF helped the SMCL purchase books for over 4,972 kids last year. In addition, families received age-appropriate information from their doctor or nurse practitioner about the importance of sharing books with even very young children.
