April is Jazz Appreciation Month, and to honor this vibrant American art form, the San Mateo County has invited the recipient of the best Latin Jazz Vocalist of 2008, Kat Parra, to perform at the following four libraries:

Another much anticipated musical delight is returning classical guitarist Peter Fletcher. Fletcher’s concert will feature selections from Fletcher's 2008 CD, Music of the Baroque. Repertoire will include works by Bach, Satie and Domeniconi. A celebrated classical guitarist, Fletcher has appeared numerous times at Carnegie Hall. Fletcher will appear at the following five libraries:

Meet Five Outstanding Writers
We’ll be featuring three outstanding writers in April, who’ll be reading form their most recently published books. All the events will feature cheese and wine receptions, book selling and signing.

Walter Mosley is the author of 29 critically acclaimed books including his Easy Rawlins and Fearless Jones series. Devil in a Blue Dress, his breakout novel was made into a motion picture with Denzel Washington and Don Cheadle. He has been an O’Henry award winner and won the Sundance Film Institute’s Risk Taker Award in 2005. He will only be appearing in the Bay Area twice, so don’t miss him reading from his latest novel at the Belmont Library complete with a wine and cheese reception.

Yiyun Li is one of the most talked-about fiction writers in America. Set in China in the late 1970s, The Vagrants is a stunning novel that is at once a picture of life in a special part of the world during a historical period, a universal portrait of human frailty and courage, and a mesmerizing work of art.

Memory and Aging: Use it or Lose it
Moira Fordyce, a doctor since 1962, is a geriatrician who for more than 20 years specialized in home care, nursing home care and hospice. She is adjunct Clinical Professor of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, and is Vice Chair of the American Geriatrics Society Public Education Committee. She was Senator Barbara Boxer’s delegate to the White House Conference on Aging in 2005. Dr. Fordyce will explain how memory changes throughout one’s lifespan and explore factors that can protect and even improve memory.
